New York rapper Pop Smoke is well-known for his unique sound and contagious positive energy which impacted and inspired many. The rappers life sadly ended too soon, when he was tragically shot and killed in his California home on Feb 19th.

It’s the first posthumous No. 1 since December 2018.

Pop Smoke’s Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, giving the late rapper his first chart-topping effort. The set was released on July 3 via Victor Victor Worldwide/Republic Records and bows with 251,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending July 9, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

News of Shoot for the Stars’ No. 1 arrival comes shortly after five people were arrested on July 9 in connection with Pop Smoke’s murder on Feb. 19. The 20-year-old Brooklyn artist (real name: Bashar Barakah Jackson) died at his Hollywood Hills home of a gunshot wound after suspects with masks entered the residence and shot him.

Pop Smoke’s family have also launched a charitable foundation named after the rapper’s forthcoming debut album.

The foundation was established by Pop Smoke himself shortly before he died and his mother revealed that it aims to “help urban youth everywhere turn their pain into champagne by making their dreams a reality.”

Pop Smoke’s album cover for debut album ‘Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon’ was designed by Off-White and Louis Vuitton designer Virgil Abloh, but after it was shared online it was slammed by fans.

One disappointed Pop Smoke fan wrote, “This is lazy. Pop Smoke deserves better,” and just hours after it was first posted, Pop Smoke’s label confirmed that it would be changed.

Steven Victor, head of Victor Victor Worldwide, confirmed the changes and tweeted, “POP WOULD LISTEN TO HIS FANS ! MAKING A CHANGE. B R B. H E A R D Y O U.”

The original Virgil Abloh-designed artwork above received some serious backlash with one person writing ‘I know middle schoolers with photoshop that can make a better album cover than Virgil’ whilst another added, ‘this man virgil Abloh only used 1 Virgil% of effort on this’.

What are Pop Smoke’s most popular songs ?

Pop Smoke is well known for his lead single “Welcome to the Party” from his debut mixtape Meet the Woo, which was released in July 2019. 

“Welcome to the Party” was made into two remixes featuring Nicki Minaj and Skepta in August 2019.

In February 2020, he released his second mixtape Meet the Woo 2, containing features from Quavo, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Fivio Foreign, and Lil Tjay.
