1. “Running Up that Hill (A Deal with God)” – Kate Bush
This single, which was first released on August 5th, 1985, peaked at No. 3 on the UK charts and No. 30 on the US Billboard Hot 100. But 37 years later, in May of 2022, the song experienced an amazing resurgence when an intense remix of “Running Up that Hill” was featured in an episode of Netflix’s popular series Stranger Things. After the show debuted its fourth season on May 27th, the track shot to No. 1 on the US charts in just a few days.
2. “N95” – Kendrick Lamar
The title of this song—the second track on Lamar’s fifth studio album with Top Dawg Entertainment, Mr. Morale, and The Big Steppers—refers to N95 face masks. In the song, Lamar asks listeners to let go of their superficial facades and coping mechanisms and examine what’s underneath.
3. “First Class” – Jake Harlow
Following the success of “Nail Tech,” the first lead track from his latest album, Jack Harlow delivers this second release of 2022. This R&B-influenced production samples Fergie’s 2007 hit “Glamorous,” particularly the pre-chorus.
4. “Rich Spirit” – Kendrick Lamar
“Rich Spirit” features an irreverent Lamar discussing his own qualities while taking a strong stand against the criticism that’s been directed his way. In this track, Lamar uses ethereal melodies and portrays a different side of his persona while tackling issues of loyalty, mortality, and narcissism.
5. “Distraction” – Polo G
“Distraction” is the first single from Polo G since the December 2021 release of Hall of Fame 2.0. The rapper dropped a video teaser on May 26th announcing the song’s release date. In this collaborative project between Polo G and renowned producer Southside, the Chicago native reflects on his childhood and how gang life has influenced him.
6. “Churchill Downs” – Jack Harlow featuring Drake
The first collaboration between Drake and Jack Harlow, this song is named after the famous horse racing track in Louisville, Kentucky, where Jack grew up. The duo split storytelling duties, sharing updates about their own lives with introspective lyrics laid over a smooth beat.
7. “I Like You (A Happier Song)” – Post Malone featuring Doja Cat
As you might expect from its title, “I Like You (A Happier Song)” offers an upbeat vibe and a catchy beat. In this first collaboration with rapper and singer Doja Cat, Malone invites her to offer a woman’s perspective of a potential romantic relationship.
8. “Die Hard” – Kendrick Lamar, Blxst, & Amanda Reifer
In this track, Lamar gets real about his insecurities, especially his doubts about whether he will still be loved if he is honest and open. By the song’s end, he realizes he has to overcome the pain of the past, let go, and trust his current lover not to be disloyal.
9. “Cooped Up” – Post Malone with Roddy Ricch
“Cooped Up,” the second single from Malone’s fourth album, twelve carat toothache, is his second joint effort with Roddy Ricch since the 2019 remix of Malone’s hit “Wow.” Malone performed “Cooped Up” alongside Roddy as the musical guest on a Saturday Night Live episode hosted by Selena Gomez in May.
10. “Wait for U” – Future featuring Tems and Drake
On “Wait for U,” the lead track off I Never Liked You, Future recruits his frequent collaborator, Drake, along with up-and-coming Nigerian R&B artist Tems for a soul-baring track describing their unhealthy relationships and addictions to drugs. Although Tems receives credit as a feature artist, Future actually used vocals he sampled from her 2020 Neo Soul song “Higher,” later revealing he gave her feature credit because he wanted to boost her recognition.
