10 Camping Essentials for Summer 2021

With another “staycation boom” predicted for this year, here’s everything you need to get started.

The camping industry had a good 2020. The spread of COVID-19 and resulting lockdown measures heavily disrupted international travel, while people sought to spend more time in the great outdoors. In a survey conducted last May, the North American Camping Report revealed that 46% of people in America thought camping was the safest way to travel during the pandemic, while a “staycation boom” in the UK saw camping sites record their busiest ever days over the course of the summer.

While vaccine rollout is proving successful and restrictions are being eased, international travel is unlikely to return to its pre-pandemic levels by Summer 2021 and, so far, camping’s popularity is set to continue. According to one report, campsites across the UK have reported a 500% increase year on year. To get ahead of the curve, here are 10 essentials to elevate your campground set up.

Heimplanet Cave Tent

The most important piece of kit you’ll be taking with you is, unsurprisingly, the tent. The Cave Tent by German outdoors label Heimplanet is built with an inflatable geodesic dome structure, allowing an easy assembly with no need for poles. Sleeping 2-3 people, the Cave is constructed from an extra stiff and resistant polyester and comes in a number of different finishes, including the stand-out Cairo Camo design.

The Heimplanet Cave Tent is available now from the Heimplanet web store and select stockists.

Snow Peak Ofuton Sleeping Bag

For any and all camping gear, it’s hard to look past Japanese label Snow Peak. The brand’s offering covers everything from tents and tarps to camping chopsticks and sake bottles, as well as its apparel range. The brand’s Ofuton Sleeping Bag brings its innovative approach to a campground necessity. First introduced back in 1996, the futon-style sleeping bag can also be used as a duvet or a futon, while its zipping system helps the user regulate their temperature whatever the conditions.

You can get your hands on the Ofuton Sleeping Bag in various sizes from the Snow Peak web store now.

Helinox Chairs

The collaborative king of camping gear, Helinox has linked up with the likes of PattaNEIGHBORHOOD and BAPE in recent years. Aside from their collaborations, Helinox chairs already come in a wide range of designs, covering everything from psychedelic tie-dye and paisley patterns to more classic black and camouflage. All of the chairs are super lightweight, and are built with an aluminum alloy frame, high-strength polyester weave chair and can be folded down for easy carry.

A selection of Helinox chairs are available through select stockists including HBX.

Dometic CFX 35

Maybe best known for making most of the mini fridges and coolers used by Rolls Royce and Range Rover, Swedish brand Dometic produces some of the best cold boxes on the market. With almost 100 years in the game, it’s no surprise that Dometic products are so good, while new technology shows how the company has evolved. The CFX3 35 model showcases these innovations, with a powerful compressor that can take temperatures down to -22C (-7.6F) and an accompanying app meaning you can control the cooler through WiFi or Bluetooth. The cooler’s ExoFrame construction also means it is both heavy-duty and lightweight.

The Dometic CFX cooler is available from the Dometic web store.

Snow Peak Takibi Fire & Grill

As mentioned earlier, Snow Peak is an industry leader for camping pieces that mix form with function. Another essential from the label is its Takibi Fire and Grill, showcasing its top tier cooking equipment for the outdoors. With its stainless steel construction, the Fire and Grill makes is easy to start a fire wherever you are, while it can also be packed down completely flat for better transportation.

Head over to the Snow Peak web store to get your hands on the Takibi Fire & Grill.

Light My Fire Firelighting Kit

Once you’ve got your new Snow Peak fire pit set up, this fire lighting set from Light My Fire makes the next stage even easier. The stand-out feature of the kit is the Swedish FireSteel 2.0 BIO, which has a spark-sure magnesium alloy allowing you to light in any conditions and altitudes, while a built-in safety whistle offers insurance in case something goes wrong. The kit also includes “GrandPa’s Firefork BIO” — which can be used to hold food over the fire or as a fire poker — and the natural Tinder-On-A-Rope firelighter.

Light My Fire’s firelighting kit is available now from the Outsiders Store.

GSI Mini Espresso Set

Just because you’re off-grid doesn’t mean you need to miss out on your morning coffee. The Mini Espresso Set from outdoor specialist GSI is constructed from Glacier stainless steel and weighs hardly anything. As if that wasn’t enough, it can also make you a double shot serving in just 90 seconds so you can get back on the trails.

wander DINEX Mug

Japanese label and wander may be best known for its outerwear items, but its focus on durability and innovation extends to its camping gear. The brand’s DINEX mugs are produced with an insulated double-wall structure that keeps the drink inside warm, while a carabiner and rope attachment make it easy to fasten to your bag when on the move. The DINEX mug comes in an array of color options, all of which feature a mountain-inspired andwander graphic.

The and wander DINEX mugs are available from the Japanese brand’s web store, and select stockists around the world.

Nalgene Water Bottle

Nalgene is well known for its high-profile collaborations — with everyone from Supreme and BAPE to Online Ceramics and EDEN power corp — which led to it being dubbed the “Air Force 1 of reusable water bottles.” The brand’s signature reusable water bottles are ubiquitous for their uncomplicated and functional design, with the same boxy aesthetic since it launched. While the bottles are incredibly practical, the numerous collaborations and blank canvas approach also make them the perfect vehicle for expression.

Classic Nalgene bottles are available from the Nalgene web store, while recent collaborations with Better Gift Shop and Brain Dead are available from the Goodhood and Brain Dead sites respectively.

Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 Portable Speaker

The A1 speaker from Danish audio stalwart Bang & Olufsen is both portable and durable, the two most important criteria for the campground. Constructed from blasted aluminum and featuring a waterproof leather strap, the A1 is fully dustproof and waterproof, while its circular shape and powerful battery life make it easy to carry around. The A1 also comes in a range of different color options, including the classic “Gray Mist,” as well as “Gold Tone,” “Black Anthracite,” pink and green.
