Reggaeton 101

The people and songs you should know!

Reggaeton is one of the hottest genres in music right now. Not too familiar with it? It originated in Puerto Rico and is influenced by American hip hop, Latin American, and Caribbean music. You’ll hear vocals of both rapping and singing that’s typically in Spanish. Here are a few of our favorite artists.

1.Daddy Yankee

Daddy Yankee has been in the game since 1991 and is known as the “King of Reggaeton.” He’s the voice behind reggaeton hits including “Gasolina,” “Llamado de Emergencia” and “Despacito.”

2.Don Omar

Don Omar is another old-school reggaeton artist and has had a decades-long feud with Daddy Yankee over who is the top reggaeton artist. His most popular songs include “Zumba,” “Angelito,” and “Taboo.”

3.J Balvin

You’ve probably heard his songs on the radio including his single “Mi Gente” which topped the Global Top 50 on Spotify and reached one billion views on YouTube. He also appeared on Cardi B’s album Invasion of Privacy and released an album in collaboration with Bad Bunny in 2019.

4.Bad Bunny

Speaking of Bad Bunny, he is another artist newer to the Reggaeton scene but already blowing up on the radio and in the clubs. His most popular songs include “Te Bote,” “MIA” featuring Drake, and “Callaita.”

5.Ozuna

Ozuna, is a Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaeton singer who is regarded as the “New King of Reggaeton.” He is the artist with the most one billion view-videos on YouTube and you may have heard some of his songs like “La Modelo” featuring Cardi B or “Taki Taki” with Selena Gomez.

Want to dance to these artists and more? Party at Onyx Room in downtown San Diego for Rumba Fridays filled with bachata, salsa, merengue and Latin hits, and Onyx Saturdays with even more Latin pop reggaeton, music, hip hop and top hits.
